Twenty 3-digit numbers to write in expanded form, as the sum of what each digit is worth: 352 = 300 + 50 + 2. A zero digit is left out of the answer, so 405 = 400 + 5. Switch to 4 digits for numbers in the thousands.

Ideas for using these sheets

  • Start by asking what each digit is worth, then join the values with plus signs.
  • Go backward too: read 600 + 70 + 1 and write 671.
  • Choose 4 digits for third and fourth grade: each number gets a full line, 10 to a page.

Every setting can be changed above before you print, and “New problems” makes a fresh sheet as often as you like.
