How to make a word scramble
- Type a title and your words, one per line: this week’s spelling list, vocabulary from a topic, or names for a party game.
- Add a hint after a dash if you like, for example “cherry - small and red”. Hints print in small type under that word.
- Choose scrambled letters, or missing letters to fill in, and a level.
- Download or print the PDF. The worksheet comes first; the answer key follows.
Tips for word scrambles
- Easy keeps the first letter in place, which gives beginning readers a way in. Hard runs the words of a phrase together, so solvers must also find where one word ends.
- Missing letters are a gentle spelling check: easy leaves out one letter, usually a vowel, which is where most spelling mistakes happen.
- Turn on the word bank for younger children, or when the words are new to them.
- “Mix again” gives a new scramble of the same words: handy for a second copy or a partner game.
- Spelling lists are often better as one sheet of each kind: a word search on Monday, a scramble on Wednesday, missing letters on Friday.
Common questions
Is it free?
Yes. No account, no email and no watermark on the sheet or the answer key.
Can a scramble come out as the word itself?
No. Every scramble is checked: it is never the word itself or another word on your list, and it never spells a rude word.
Can I use phrases?
Yes. Each word of a phrase is scrambled on its own and the gap between them stays, except on the hard level, where the letters of the whole phrase are mixed together.
How many words fit on a sheet?
Up to 40 words or phrases of up to 24 letters. Short lists print in big letters; long lists use two columns, and continue onto another page if needed.
Can I get the same sheet again later?
Use “Copy link to this sheet”. The link holds your words and settings and rebuilds exactly the same scramble. Sheets you download or print on this device are also listed under “Your recent sheets”.
Can I print without downloading?
Yes. Print, next to Download, sends the worksheet and its answer key straight to your printer. On some browsers and on phones it opens in a new tab, ready to print from there.
