Five subtraction worksheets, easiest first: taking away within 10 and 20, then 2-digit and 3-digit numbers, with and without regrouping. The larger number always goes on top, so no answer is ever below zero.

Ready to print: Subtraction within 20, with its answer key. Open any skill in the list for its own sheet.

Ideas for using these sheets

  • Teach counting up as well as taking away: for 13 − 9, count up from 9 to 13 and the answer is 4.
  • Bring out base-ten blocks before the first regrouping sheet, so trading a ten for ten ones is something children have done with their hands.
  • Write a few story problems of your own to go with a sheet, such as 15 grapes with 6 eaten, to show where subtraction turns up.
  • Use the same skill for a week with “New problems” each day, rather than a new skill every day.

Every setting can be changed above before you print, and “New problems” makes a fresh sheet as often as you like.
